Aqara water leak detector – A reliable guardian for your home

Fortunately, water leaks don’t happen every four mornings, but they can quickly turn into a disaster, damaging a lot of electrical equipment, damaging our floors and even our neighbours’ ceilings, and sometimes even causing our water bills to skyrocket. Insidious, they often occur in our absence or are difficult to spot. After testing the Aqara motion detector, let’s continue our exploration of the brand’s ecosystem with another device that can be just as practical: the Aqara water leak detector.

Aqara Water leak sensor

A smart water leak detector

Unboxing and presentation

The Aqara water leak detector is presented, like the rest of the range, in a small elegant white box. On the front panel, the visual reveals a small, round device decorated with a drop of water that leaves little doubt about its design, as confirmed by the inscription above.

On the side panels, we find the traditional small pictograms informing us of its main functions: detecting water leaks, sounding local or remote alarms, or even interacting with a magnetic valve to automatically stop the water supply. Wireless, it benefits, like the other sensors of the brand, from a two-year autonomy.

On opening, we discover a worthy representative of Aqara, its compact design and elegant sparkling white leaving little doubt as to its filiation. Measuring 5 cm in diameter and only 1.5 cm thick, the Aqara water leak detector is powered by a CR2032 battery and also works as a ZigBee via a gateway. We will therefore have to combine it with our Aqara Europe gateway.

Its upper surface is smooth and uniform, showing only a discreet little pictogram in the shape of a drop of water, with no bumps or buttons.

It is almost the same underneath, where only a small hatch allowing access to the battery and two screws for sealing the device are present. Certified IP67, it is completely sealed and can be submerged up to 1 meter, which seems quite logical given its function.

Simplicity and efficiency always on the agenda

A water sensor compatible with Mi Home
As in our previous tests, we are going to use the Mi Home application to install this Aqara water leak detector until a home application arrives soon. To do this, we used the Aqara Europe gateway. Those who follow our tutorials carefully have probably already understood that we will also find it in our Xiaomi / Aqara home automation on Home Assistant .

Once connected to your 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network, simply press the “+” in the top right-hand corner, select “Sensor” from the left-hand menu and then choose “Aqara water leak sensor”.

If you are using Mi Home in English on a European server, it is the last one in the list. A 30-second detection phase then begins, but it will take even less time than that for your Aqara EU gateway to associate it.

Then, you can obviously rename the device and place it in a room of your “Mi Home”. It’s always quick and easy.

As always, the installation of this Aqara flood or leakage sensor went off without a hitch. Far from the regular failures of Wi-Fi, the ZigBee once again proves its simplicity as well as its responsiveness.

Automations on Mi Home

As with the other Aqara smart home devices, we will be able to create automation very easily: when a water leak is detected or when the leak is over. We must admit that the second one is less useful, so we will present the first one, but the second one can allow you to turn off the alarm.

In our example, we decided to use the alarm functionality of the Aqara Europe gateway. As soon as a water leak is detected, the sensor will send a signal to our gateway and activate the alarm. We have a wide range of ring tones to choose from, but we chose one that is stressful enough to ensure a quick response, even at night.

Finally, we find a log of the device’s events: handy to check if a small leak hasn’t occurred while you were away!

How it works

In concrete terms, if the water level reaches 0.5 mm, the leak sensor will trigger a sound and light alarm on the Aqara gateway that will send a notification to your smartphone within a second, wherever you are, allowing you to react quickly and, for example, cut off the water supply. Aqara indicates that its device allows you to interact with a connected valve, maybe it will arrive soon?

In the meantime, if you are using a Home Assistant home automation box and you also have a connected valve, you should be able to create automation without any trouble. We will study the question soon…

Technology gadget tips for Christmas gifts

Yes, it’s only the beginning of October, but it’s also common knowledge that Christmas always comes suddenly and unexpectedly. To make sure you don’t stand without Christmas presents, we’ll show you some technical gadgets that are great Christmas gift ideas.

There are, for example, tips from the areas of games, Smart Home and Internet of Things.

Technology gadgets for Christmas – not just for nerds

The Christmas present thing is one of those things. Some have already bought and packed all presents half a year before, some run desperately through the shops on Christmas Eve and look for the perfect Christmas present. Especially for technology enthusiasts there are numerous Christmas gift ideas – for every budget.

Image result for christmas games

The product range extends from “definitely useful” to “who has fun with it” to “is somehow cool, but does not need a human being”. To make the decision a bit easier for you, we’ve picked out a few technical gadgets that will not only please nerds.

Technique Gadgets Tip 1: Gaming

The first category of our Christmas gift ideas is about gaming. On the one hand, many new games for PlayStation, XBox and Co. have come onto the market this year, which should not only make hardcore gamers happy. For example, many game highlights were presented at Gamescom 2018. For example, the latest part of Assassin’s Creed (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey) or Desperados III will be on display. Otherwise, classics such as Fifa 19 or the western shooter Red Dead Redemption 2 will of course also be presented under the Christmas tree.

If you’d rather dig a little deeper into your pocket, you can give your loved ones a treat with a game console, for example. Retro consoles in particular are currently very much in vogue. Nintendo already has the Nintendo Classic Mini (SNES) on the market. In November 2018, the N64 Classic Mini could be released in time for Christmas. But also a Retro-PlayStation or the C64 Mini are exciting technical gifts for Christmas.

Technology Gadgets Tip 2: Voice Assistants and Smart Home

Everyone is currently talking about Smart Home and voice assistants. That’s why our gift finder for technical gifts should not be without them. When it comes to voice assistants, for example, you can choose between Amazons Alexa, Apple’s HomePod and Google Home. In addition, many household appliances now also offer voice control based on one of the speech assistants mentioned.

More technology gadgets in this category: Speaker systems with voice assistant. You can, for example, control your music or have the sound of your TV transmitted. There are many suppliers of such systems on the market, such as Sonos, Panasonic and JBL.

Technology gifts in the smart home segment

And that brings us to the topic of the Smart Home. With smart lighting or intelligent heating systems, you can quickly turn your home into a smart home. There are also smart sockets that you can use to control lamps, electrical appliances, etc. via an app or remote control.

Another nice Christmas gift idea: mood lights like Aqara LED light bulb, which you can operate via app or voice control. A little less smart, but all the more practical are sockets that also have USB connections. For example, you can charge several devices simultaneously via USB.

Smart doorbell systems like Ring’s provide more security. With two-way audio, infrared night vision and adjustable motion sensors, this ensures that you always know who is at your door.

technical gifts for nerds

Technique Gadget Tip 3: For Technique Hobbyists

Admittedly, now we are moving more slowly but surely in the direction of “technical gifts for nerds”. But: There are many technical gadgets, with which young and old can have fun. We are talking about robots. There is now a useful helper for every area of life, for example a mowing or vacuuming robot.

But they are also available in smaller versions. You can use them, for example, to get started with programming (e.g. with the Droid Inventor Kit) or simply live out your inner play instinct. Even with a Raspberry Pi many exciting projects can be realized without requiring extensive programming knowledge. Thus, for example, even inconspicuous home devices can be transformed into a smart home capable device.

Technology Gadgets Tips 4: For the sporty

Do you like sports or do you like spending time outdoors? Also for this there are suitable technical gadgets, which are suitable as gifts for Christmas. For example, if you travel a lot by bike and have ever wanted a bicycle navigation device, you will find it in the Cobi Hub or the SmartHalo Bicycle Navigator. This turns a normal bicycle into a smart bike and, thanks to additional safety functions such as a built-in alarm system and a digital bell, provides more safety in road traffic.

Anyone who travels a lot and uses their smartphone will probably need a power supply more often. In addition to the classic Powerbank, battery sleeves are also suitable as Christmas gifts. This protects your smartphone better from external influences and gives you the extra bit of battery life.

aqara smart wireless switch

Packaging

As a reminder, Aqara is a range of products from the Xiaomi brand. We will therefore find here a rather minimalist package, as usual with Xiaomi. Thus, inside the box, we will have: the switch, two screws, a double-sided adhesive and a Chinese manual for purists

Switch operation

The operation of this switch is simple. Just pair it with Xiaomi’s Gateway and you’re done. To do this, we will use the MiHome application. Then, to position the switch, it will be necessary to use the double-sided adhesive supplied.

Integration of the switch in the Mi-Home application

To pair the button with the Xiaomi Gateway, it is necessary to use the MiHome application. If you don’t have this application, download it and install it. At the first launch, you will need to log into your Mi account (create one if you don’t have one).

So open the MiHome application and press the + button at the top right.

On the next screen, press the Add manually button at the bottom.

Now look for the switch in the list: this one is called Aqara smart wireless switch.

The gateway will search for the switch. For it to detect it, it must be switched to pairing mode. To do this, press the button until the LEDs flash 3 times (about 5 seconds).

Wait while pairing.

Once the operation is complete, select the room in which it will be installed.

All you have to do is give a name to your switch to make it easier to find in the application.

And that’s it, the configuration is finished, your switch is now operational.

Integration of the switch in Domoticz

We will now go further and integrate our switch in Domoticz. To do this, you must have integrated the Xiaomi Gateway into your Domoticz beforehand. Connect to your Domoticz. Go to the Settings menu and then to Devices.

Then click on the Unused button at the top right. This allows you to see more clearly since only devices not used by Domoticz are displayed. Simply locate your switch in the list and click on the green arrow at the end of the line on the right to add it to your system.

Simply give this switch a name and click Add Device.

We will now place the switch in a room under Domoticz. This makes it easy to sort your devices. It’s very convenient when you start to have a lot of them. Click on Settings, More options, Map and then Devices by location.

If you have not yet created the part in Domoticz, click on the top right button Add a plan and give a name to your part. For my part, I will create the Garage.

Now select the room in which the switch will be located and look for it in the drop-down list at the bottom of the page.

Then click on Add. If you have other devices to put in the garage room, proceed in the same way. Then, go back to the Switches tab and select the part with the drop-down menu located at the top right: and there you see your switch: it is functional!

Opinion on the Aqara smart wireless switch

Like all Aqara devices, the wireless switch is easy to install and works very well. I installed 2 of them in my garage to create a back and forth, something I didn’t have at the base. On the design side, they’re pretty cool. Finally, they are powered by a CR2032 battery, whose lifetime is given by Xiaomi at 2 years! So don’t get too upset.

Aqara Smart Motion Sensor Review

I already reported here in the blog about a few sensors that I have currently installed in my four walls. These are products from Aqara, which has a few simple reasons. The hub can be used to connect a lot of sensors and automate things. The hub comes with an app that can be used for Android and iOS, here in Europe it’s the Mi Home app. With this you can control everything, but you can also integrate the hub into Apple HomeKit, so you can use many of the Zigbee-enabled sensors with other devices. This is where, for example, the Aqara motion detector comes into play, which I find quite successful.

aqara-smart-home-human-body-sensor

The sensor can be positioned differently. Either you only use the upper part, i.e. the actual sensor, or alternatively there is a stand, which you can also fix somewhere with the supplied adhesive tape. The Aqara smart motion sensor has a recognition angle of 170° and detects movements of a human body at a distance of about 7 meters. Besides the actual detection of movements, it is also possible to make switching states based on the measured brightness. Thus, devices can be switched at nightfall, such as lamps.

However, we use automation to regulate that certain lamps are switched on at a certain time of day when there is movement, we receive notifications when movements have been detected, when we are away from home, or when the alarm system becomes active. This has worked quite well in recent weeks, but it should be remembered that it is a smart motion sensor. It does not only strike at people, but also at smaller objects – in this case also my vacuum cleaner robot is recognized.

aqara smart motion sensor

What does such a motion sensor cost? That depends on where you order. I have shot mine myself for 12 Euro, ordered from Gearbest, whereby there are always actions – sometimes the sensors are also cheaper at Aliexpress and Banggood. The Aqara sensors can also be found on eBay and Amazon, often more than twice as expensive, although they are also Chinese dealers.

The sensors have a CE-logo, furthermore it is best to order only small quantities in order to stay below the value limit of 22 Euro – customs includes shipping costs in this value limit. The decisive factor is what amount was actually paid to receive the goods. If postage costs are included in the final invoice amount, they will not be deducted.

FAQs: How to use Amazon Echo and Alexa

As soon as Alexa gets here, she does what she wants. It almost feels like the language assistant is giving pleasure to confuse inexperienced users of Amazon Echo devices. With a few tricks, however, the misunderstandings between man and machine can be easily avoided. We answer the most frequently asked questions about the efficient use of Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Co.

What is Alexa?

In a very sober way, Alexa is a voice service from Amazon that enables remote control of many devices and apps due to its cloud connection. Amazon’s own Echo Speakers (e.g. Echo Dot 3), Amazon Displays (e.g. Echo Show 2) and Amazon Fire Tablets bring the Alexa voice software with them and some of them are already available in the third generation. In addition, more and more third-party manufacturers are integrating Alexa into their devices. We present some of them in our overview of the Amazon Echo alternatives.

alexa

Who is Alexa? Is there a real person behind it?

For the first version of Alexa, which was initially only available in the USA, Amazon had a professional voiceover artist in Gdansk, Poland, create a recording according to media information. According to insiders, a professional human spokeswoman in Germany also uses Alexa’s announcements. Her identity, however, has not yet been confirmed by Amazon.

It is very likely, however, that the company will strive to create its artificial intelligence as humanly as possible in the near future, as we explained some time ago in our article on Alexa robots with legs and “brains”.

What can Alexa do?

Alexa can now do almost any job in the household or garden. No matter if it’s about opening the shutters and making coffee in the morning, starting the dishwasher and mowing the lawn at noon or locking the front door with an electronic door lock in the evening – Alexa compatible devices are available for (almost) every application. This is made possible by Alexa Skills, which are additional functions that can be activated online. Almost all of these are free of charge and can be activated in the Amazon Skill Store or, in some cases, directly by voice command. You can find out which of them are particularly useful or entertaining in the following expert guides:

Amazon Echo: These are the most important Alexa voice commands
Alexa Questions: Top list of funny Alexa Easter eggs and sayings

Existing devices can also be retrofitted using WLAN sockets. These are already available from 10 euros and are suitable for voice control of coffee machines, toasters or floor lamps, for example.

But even users who do not want to purchase Alexa-compatible devices can benefit from the smart voice assistant. Thus for example also without auxiliary devices by voice command dates can be administered, purchase lists provided, radio stations be played back or calls be transacted. Beyond that in the Amazon Skill Store thousands Entertainment Alexa Skills are available to quizzen, play, audio books streamen and for much more.

What do I need for Alexa?

The installation of an Alexa loudspeaker is also easy for newcomers to technology. All you have to do is connect the power supply unit to the mains, connect the echo to the WLAN and install the Alexa App. It is available for Fire OS 3.0, Android 4.4 or iOS 8.0 and higher and can be downloaded as Amazon-Alexa-App, Google Playstore Alexa-App as well as iTunes Alexa-App. Further information on the technical background can be found here: Alexa: Construction and functions simply explained.

Can I use Echo without Prime?

A Prime account is not necessary for Alexa use. Basically, you don’t even need an echo speaker. Instead, the Alexa software can even be tested in a browser. But for an efficient use it makes sense to link Alexa at least with a normal Amazon account.

Does Alexa also play music without Prime Music or Amazon Music Unlimited Account?

As already mentioned, Alexa can play many internet radio stations without paying subscriptions or additional devices. Here, too, the following applies: If you want to use certain playlists or streaming services, you have to open an account with the respective providers and pay any additional fees. Our guide shows alternatives to Amazon Prime Music or Amazon Music Unlimited: Alexa-compatible streaming services.

Can I use skills without installation?

A language assistant, whose skills have to be searched for individually in the network and activated in the Alexa App first, is quite impractical. Amazon has also noticed this in the meantime and excluded the detour via the Amazon Skill Store. In the meantime, all skills that do not require personal user data can be installed using the command “Open Alexa [skill name]”. Only skills with their own login, which for example are linked to a bank account (delivery command etc.), still have to be activated via the Alexa App. If you don’t feel like clicking your way through more than 15,000 available skills, you can also take inspiration from our article Top Alexa-Skills.

Do echo speakers always have to be connected to the Internet?

The answer in this case is definitely yes. Because without a cloud connection, Alexa has no way of processing voice commands. So she can’t execute skills, retrieve requested information, or control smart home devices.

Can Alexa be used without an echo?

Yes, that works. There are several ways to do this. On the one hand, many other manufacturers besides Amazon already offer loudspeakers with Alexa. Besides Amazon’s echoes, there are also smart loudspeakers from Medion, Sonos or Ultimate Ears. We present eight of them in our overview of alternative Alexa loudspeakers.

On the other hand, Alexa functions can also be tried out for free via the Alexa app for smartphones or the reverb app. If you want to accept phone calls with Alexa, you don’t necessarily need your own echo device. The installation of the Alexa App is sufficient if necessary.

Alexa: Meaning of the colors on the light ring

The light ring on echo devices should indicate the respective status of the loudspeakers. Depending on the colour, it indicates whether the device is restarting, processing data or has a technical problem. We explain the meaning behind it:

  • Light blue, flashing light: the system is started
  • Echo does not light up at all: the loudspeaker is waiting for voice commands.
  • Speaker is illuminated light blue on one side: Alexa is currently processing a voice command
  • Light ring flashes orange: connection to WLAN is established
  • Alexa light ring is red: microphone is switched off, to switch on press the microphone button on top of the loudspeaker
  • White light ring: the volume is currently being configured
  • Echo Loudspeaker flashes purple: there was an error when connecting to the WLAN.
  • Light ring flashes light blue and then turns purple: “Please do not disturb function is activated”. More about this in the following text paragraph.
  • Echo flashes purple briefly after each voice command: The “Please do not disturb function is activated”.
  • Alexa light ring flashes yellow: A message or notification is ready. It can be retrieved with the voice command “Play my messages” or “What have I missed?
  • Flashing green light: A call or “drop in” is about to arrive.

Can the light ring be switched off?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to switch off the light ring completely and still use the device. There is only the possibility to deactivate the microphone or to block incoming Alexa Drop-ins and calls via the “Do not disturb function”.

How can I enable the “Do not disturb” feature?

This function does not mean that the echo is switched off. Instead, only incoming calls or drop-ins are prevented. This is possible with the following speaker models: Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and Echo Plus. While the function can be activated on most of them via “Do not disturb”, it can also be selected on the screen during the Echo Show. To do this, wipe the display with your fingers from bottom to top and click on “Do not disturb”. If you like, you can also time the function for a certain period of time. However, switching off the light ring or the microphone is not completely possible – Alexa still listens to all other requests and voice commands.

Can I completely switch off the microphone at the echo?

On top of the Amazon echo is a button with a microphone icon. If this button is pressed, the button lights up red and indicates that the echo is not active. This is practical, for example, when Alexa commercials are shown on television. To deactivate the ‘Silent Mode’ the same button must be pressed again, because a verbal deactivation is logically not possible.

Can I use the Amazon Echo as an alarm system?

With the Alexa Guard function, the microphones of smart echo loudspeakers can be sensitized to burglary noises such as breaking glass. However, Amazone’s speech assistant is not yet able to detect dangers visually on her own. However, to detect an intruder sneaking silently through the house, there are various smart surveillance and alarm systems that can be networked with Alexa. For example, it is possible to focus certain cameras when leaving the house with a voice command. The Echo Show speakers and Echo Spot are the only echoes with a display that can also display video recordings of a ring doorbell.

What data does Echo record?

A big accusation of the Amazon Echo opponents is that it is not recognizable when the device is listening in. According to the manufacturer, the echo records permanently, but erases the recordings after a few seconds. So the Amazon Echo is able to recognize the “wake-up word” Alexa. The blue light ring on the Amazon Echo signals that verbal requests are being sent to the cloud. Each request is stored in the Alexa app. Here you can see the data sent to the cloud. Via the settings in the Alexa App you can activate an activation tone in the category ‘Sounds’. This short beep sounds every time the echo has recognized the activation word and sends data to the cloud. In addition, you can switch on an end tone, which acoustically signals the end of the transmission.

Editors’ tip: If a stupid saying is inadvertently immortalized in the search history of the Alexa app, it can be deleted in just three steps. Further tips and tricks for the safe handling of your own data can be found in our guidebooks on deleting search history and the Alexa data protection overview.

How can I use Alexa and still protect my privacy?

There is an alternative to the echo speakers where Alexa doesn’t automatically listen in. If you have installed a Fire TV stick, you can also access information about it or even control your Smart Home.

What accessories are available for the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Co.?

For the Amazon Echo as well as for the Echo Plus, the Echo Dot and many other models there are numerous – more or less practical – accessory products. For example, if you don’t want to place your device on a table or shelf, you can mount it on the wall with a special bracket. If, on the other hand, you prefer to place your smart loudspeaker as an eye-catcher in the middle of the room, you will find protective covers and decorative design adhesive films for every taste in the net. In our Alexa Accessories Overview we introduce some of the coolest mounts, powerbanks & gadgets for Amazon Echo speakers.

Why doesn’t Alexa understand me?

Before we can talk to Alexa, the following basic requirements must be met:

  • The device has been properly installed and is connected to a WLAN network.
  • The integrated microphone is active (if not, the microphone button on the top lights up red and must be pressed again).
  • The loudspeaker is at least 20 cm away from possible sources of interference, such as microwaves or a baby monitor.
  • The device should not stand on the floor, but on a table or shelf.

If your echo speaker still doesn’t work, reduce background noise, speak slowly and clearly, and repeat your voice command several times. It can also be helpful to formulate questions in a more general way.

What does Alexa cost?

Many technology enthusiasts wonder what it will cost to use Alexa on a regular basis. What does Alexa cost monthly? Basically, the Alexa language software only causes costs for the Internet connection used and does not require a separate subscription with costs. However, if you want to stream music or movies via popular services (e.g. Amazon Music, Spotify or Napster), you will of course need an account with the respective streaming provider and may have to pay subscription fees. The same also applies to skills that can be used to order goods (e.g. delivery command). Ordering via Alexa does not cost anything, the goods or booked services of course do. Since short also In-App purchases are possible after the free activation of Alexa Skills.

XIAOMI HONEYWELL FORMALDEHYDE DETECTOR

This weekend I presented you a new product to measure air quality. This is not the first time that the Honeywell brand has been present on the crowdfunding platform. This brand is known worldwide for its safety related products. Today we find her with a nice little gadget called Xiaomi Honeywell Formaldehyde Detector. It is easily transportable and autonomous, let’s discover it all immediately.

Image result for mijia honeywell formaldehyde detector

XIAOMI HONEYWELL FORMALDEHYDE DETECTOR

This small sensor is very similar to the Xiaomi Smart Bedside Music Desk Clock in reduced format. Indeed, it comes with a white lacquered ABS shell and a black face. On the latter there is an LED display and a red/green light to indicate air quality. Inside Honeywell has placed a sensor with an electrochemical probe calibrated at the gas factory to determine a result in PPB ( parts per billion). As a reminder, formaldehyde is a gas that is mainly found in indoor environments. It is known to be irritating and even carcinogenic of category 1B or suspected carcinogen in humans. In case of abnormal formaldehyde concentration, the sensor will send an alert and indicate a red light with the measured value. On the other hand, if the rate is correct, the LED will be green.

The Xiaomi Honeywell Formaldehyde Detector measures 72 mm x 72 mm x 39 mm for a weight of 90 grams. It is autonomous and can record values for a month and a half or make measurements in real time. Via the Mi Home application and thanks to the different readings it will define a general trend of the ambient air in your home. Its battery has a battery life of about 45 days and will alert you in case of low battery life.

Xiaomi Mijia Honeywell Formaldehyde Detector will be available for sale from April 9. As for its price, it is 299 yuan or about 39€.

Sonos Beam – Soundbar with Alexa

Sonos introduces the Sonos Beam, a somewhat smaller and cheaper sound bar. Unlike the Sonos Playbar and Playbase, it comes with the language assistant Alexa on board. Sonos also uses an HDMI connection to a sound bar for the first time.

After the Sonos One, the Sonos Beam is the second smart loudspeaker from Sonos that comes with a language assistant. The Sonos Beam is equipped with 5 microphones, an HDMI and a LAN port. The Sonos Beam is controlled by voice or via the integrated touch keys, which are taken over from the Sonos One. The microphones of the smart Multiroom loudspeaker can also be switched off via the touch control panel.

Image result for Sonos Beam

Technical details

The HDMI port in the new Sonos Beam is ARC (“Audio Return Channel”) capable. This means that with compatible TVs, the sound can be transmitted directly to the sound bar via HDMI. In addition, the sound bar communicates with the TV via CEC and the TV communicates with the sound bar, which is why the TV remote control works directly with the beam without further setup. For older televisions, Sonos provides an adapter to the optical audio output (the same input that also fits into the Sonos Playbar and Playbase). CEC also enables the TV to be switched on via the integrated Alexa.

From July, the Sonos Beam will receive AirPlay 2 via a software update. AirPlay 2 has also been announced for the Sonos One, Playbase and Play 5. The Sonos devices can also be accessed via Siri, Homekit or natively from iOS and macOS.

The Google Assistant, which has already been announced for the Sonos One, will also follow later.

Sonos 5.1 Sourround System

Analogous to Playbar and Playbase, the Sonos Beam (with 2 Sonos One and one Sub) can be used to create a 5.1 system. The difference is that the Sonos Beam is slightly cheaper and smaller. The Sonos Beam is the smallest Sonos sound bar with a length of 65 cm. Nevertheless, it should be sufficient to sound small to medium sized rooms. Sonos supports PCM Sterero, Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital 5.1 as sound codecs. Sonos still does not supply a DTS codec with its latest product.

My opinion about the new Sonos Beam Soundbar

Sonos continues its clear design line. Optically the Beam fits perfectly to the Sonos One. I was also very surprised by the price. It is now the cheapest way to set up a Sonos 5.1 system. Still without DTS – a pity. Also from other modern sound codecs every track is missing. The Sonos Beam is certainly a great product at a great price, but a little more innovation I personally would have liked. The upcoming updates will show how the new features will turn out.

Awox smart lighting kit

With the smart lighting kit from Awox, manage the lighting atmosphere in your home at a lower cost. There are now many connected bulbs on the market, so it becomes complicated for a novice to make the right choice across this wide range of devices.

Through this new test, we will then discover the product and install it in the smart home to give you a clearer idea of the product.

A smart lighting starter kit

The kit under test today can be compared to a starter kit for the Awox environment. Indeed, this kit includes a connected bulb and a remote control to control the light atmosphere of the bulb.

Related image

Technical specifications

  • E27 low power LED bulb (energy class A+) 9W equivalent to 60W incandescent. 806 lumen at 3000°K
  • Adjustment of colour, light intensity and white temperature (from 2700 to 6000°K).
  • Operable with the free Smart CONTROL application, compatible with most smartphones and tablets equipped with Bluetooth® 4.0 or later, SmartPEBBLE wireless switch or remote control
  • Possibility to create groups (up to 50 bulbs per group) and extend the range to 100 m

The installation

The installation of the kit is relatively simple, let’s see the start-up procedure in detail.

1 Start by taking control of the remote control

2 Insert the two supplied batteries into the box on the back of the remote control.

3 Then comes the turn of the bulb. Take the Awox bulb in hand.

4 Plug this bulb into a lamp or ceiling light in the house and power it up.

5 Now press the first button of the remote control for a few seconds and voilà, your remote control and your bulb are associated! You can now adjust the intensity or colour of your bulb by simply pressing the buttons on the remote control.

On the mobile application side

If the Awox smart lighting kit can work perfectly autonomously with its remote control, it is still a connected object. In fact, there is a mobile application that allows you to control the bulbs even more widely. A well done application that reminds us a lot of Philips Hue’s, but it may not be so harmless after all….

1 As with all applications, you must go through the account creation step before you can start using it. Then create an account very simply via the small embedded form.

2 Immediately after installation, the application does not waste time and starts to discover the Awox objects within reach.

3 In order to easily dissociate the objects linked to the application, an option is available to photograph the device and give it a name.

4 It is then proposed to assign the object to a room in the house for a much more practical cetralized management later on. Finally, the objects already linked together as we did above with the bulb then go up on their own.

5 Similarly, these objects can also be customized for easier identification.

6 Once associated, the devices are listed in the “my devices” menu from there, unit management for each group via the parts, everything is possible. As far as colour is concerned, there are many choices.

7 Favorite color, selection via a spectrum or from a theme… Awox bulbs can reproduce 16 million colors, the choices are endless!

8 A sequence mode allows for light transitions. A disco mode allows to vary the light according to the tempo of the music, very nice transitions.

9 Finally, everything is planned with regard to device maintenance since updates are distributed from the application to the devices.

The Awox bulb and the Philips Hue bulb

What strange parallel will you tell me? Not so much, because if the Awox bulbs are close enough to the Philips Hue bulbs, by the designer or by the application, they are also communicating.

Indeed, I was surprised to see that the Awox application could discover my Philips Hue devices and add them like any other device. A very interesting point then, but I’m only telling you this for the moment, we’ll come back to this point in a future dedicated article!

Conclusion

A surprising Awox kit. I had never had the opportunity to take in hand the Awox connected bulbs before this test, I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised! A well made application, bright bulbs that deliver beautiful colors. A very practical remote control and it too very intuitive, finally a compatibility with Philips Hue bulbs very very interesting for the future.

iRobot Roomba i7+

iRobot announces the arrival in Italy of its Roomba i7+ vacuum cleaner robot, which is able to do everything on its own, even cleaning itself.

The vacuum cleaner robots are a growing market and the American company iRobot is among the absolute protagonists of this sector. iRobot has announced the Italian debut of the new Roomba i7+ which, compared to the other vacuum cleaners of the brand, does something really unique: cleaning itself. After completing each cleaning session, Roomba i7+ reaches its starting point where there is a sort of container (Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal) inside which will be collected the dirt sucked into a comfortable bag that can then be removed by people to be thrown away.

iRobot Roomba i7+

The bags should only be replaced when they are full, an operation that is very rarely carried out. For the rest, the new iRobot Roomba i7+ is a premium product of the American brand and therefore has all the technologies that can be found in other iRobot products.

This vacuum cleaner robot offers the well-known technology that allows you to memorize the floor plans of the house to optimize the cleanliness of the rooms. In addition, using the dedicated iRobot Home application, people can program room cleaning as well as remotely manage the vacuum cleaner robot.

There are also convenient supports for Alexa and the Google Assistant. People can manage some of the robot’s functions directly with the help of convenient voice commands. The new iRobot Roomba i7+ will be available in stores by the end of February at a price of 1,199 euros. Alternatively, a version without Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal is also available for 899 euros.

Sonos One Gen 2, many small refinements

Sonos One Gen 2 introduces many small refinements while maintaining internal design and functionality.

Sonos One Gen 2 is the evolution of the basic model of the well-known smart speaker of the American company. Sonos has worked hard to refine its product to offer its customers greater quality. From the design point of view, the second generation of the smart speaker has a look substantially identical to that of the previous model.

The real novelties are in fact at the hardware level. Sonos has integrated a faster processor, more memory and the Bluetooth LE. The internal microphones have gone from 6 to 4 but have a greater sensitivity. This hardware refresh should allow the Sonos One Gen 2 to last longer. Please note that the Bluetooth LE will only be used during the setup procedure.

Sonos One Gen 2

Sonos One Gen 2 does not introduce anything new in terms of functionality. The new smart speaker will have exactly the same functions as the previous model. The firmware updates will also be the same. Those who hoped that the new model would lead to the debut of the Google Assistant may be disappointed. The arrival of the Google Voice Assistant will still have to wait some time. Present, however, the integration with Alexa.

The new Sonos One Gen 2 has already been offered for sale in Italy for 229 euros. The previous model will remain on the market at 178 euros probably until stocks are exhausted.

More details about the product are available in the official sheet on the Sonos website.
